Cultism in Nigeria

A group of men suspected to be cultists caused panic in the Tinumola Estate area of Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, after they stoned a 25-year-old man identified as Deji, to death after he was released from prison for cult related offences.

It was gathered that the killers trailed their victim to a spot where he was relaxing with some friends and used heavy stones to smash his head and he died on the spot.

Though the police are of the theory that the deceased must have had an argument with the people that killed him, those in the know say it was more of a reprisal attack because the victim allegedly belonged to a rival cult group.

A police source told our correspondent that the killing might be as a result of an argument between the deceased and those who murdered him.

A source close to the deceased narrated that Deji, the only son of his parents, was expelled from the Osun State College of Technology, Esa Oke, and was charged and sent to prison some years ago.

“He finished serving his prison term about three years ago and impregnated a lady. He moved out of his parents’ house to start living on his own after he impregnated the lady. They were living together with their child when he was killed.

His father and mother were civil servants and they only heard about the death of their son when they called his number around 11.40pm on Sunday.

His father is no longer working because one of his legs was recently amputated as a result of diabetes."
