Heartless HIV+ man sentenced for sleeping with women without telling them his status

A man has been jailed after having unprotected sex with two women without telling them he was HIV positive

  • Published:

Mweetwa Muleya, 28, infected the two women with the virus after he failed to tell them about his condition.

A court heard the women were ‘devastated’ to find out they had caught the virus after going for blood tests.

Judge Huw Davies QC said: "You were selfish to a degree which beggars description. You deceived, quite deliberately, one person after another in ways that damaged their lives with lasting consequences. The harm to these victims was of the worst kind."

He was jailed for seven years.

One of the victims, who is known as Miss B, said Muleya had destroyed her life.

Muleya was diagnosed with HIV at 15 but said his mother didn’t tell him until he was nearly 19.

Muleya, who came to the UK from Zambia in his teens, was given anti-retroviral medication to control the virus and advice on how to stop its spread.

He was told it would be a crime to have unprotected sex with someone and not disclose his positive status.

But Swansea Crown Court heard Muleya fell into a lifestyle of drink and drugs and lapsed when it came to sexual health check ups.

Muleya said he did drink and take drugs because he was in denial about his condition, Swansea Crown Court heard. Nonetheless Muleya remained sexually active.

When arrested Muleya said he had used protection with both women.

Muleya, of Matthew Street, Swansea, pleaded guilty to two counts of causing of GBH in May this year.

He was sentenced to seven years in prison, and handed an extra six months for unrelated drug offences.
