Quack nurse gets 7-years in jail for killing client during abortion

A quack nurse who operated an illegal abortion clinic has been sent to jail for causing the death of her client.

Should abortion be legalized?

35-year-old Taibat Jegede, popularly called Alhaja, a quack nurse based in Ado-Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State,  has been sentenced to seven years in prison over the killing of one Seyi Ibitoye, whom she allegedly tried to abort her baby.

It was gathered that Jegede, who dropped out from the College of Health Technology, Akure, in 2006, had been parading herself as a nurse in the town and run an illegal abortion clinic for many years.

The court heard that the convict who had once been imprisoned on a similar charge, administered injections on the deceased who died of bleeding complications in May 2012.

According to the prosecution, the abortion was one of the series carried out by Jegede over the years in her one bedroom apartment turned clinic, with many of such resulting in serious complications including deaths.

The prosecution also tendered exhibits recovered from Jegede's 'clinic' including syringes with needles, ‎injections, and gloves, among others.

In her defence, Jegede who claimed to be a licensed agent, said she had worked in different places including the British American Tobacco clinic in Ibadan, the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital and eventually in Rauz Hospital, Apo, in Abuja.

She told the court that she treated the deceased for body pains when she complained of irregularities from her menstrual period.

The presiding Judge, Justice Abodunde, ruled that the evidence administered were the best guide to convict the accused, since a trial court can convict on even single evidence proven beyond reasonable doubt.
