Geraint Thomas overcomes puncture to claim gold for Wales on final day

Cyclist Geraint Thomas overcame a puncture in the closing stages to claim road race gold on the closing day of the Commonwealth Games.

The Welshman entered the final lap alongside England's Scott Thwaites and New Zealander Jack Bauer, with the trio having reeled in Peter Kennaugh's initial break and opened up a sizeable advantage.

Thomas made his move with around 11 kilometres to go and appeared to be cruising to gold until a front puncture, accompanied by a slow tyre change, threatened to scupper his chances.

However, Thomas' good work in establishing a considerable lead over Thwaites and Bauer paid off as he was able to get back on his bike and resume before being caught by the chasing duo.

The Team Sky rider, who took bronze in the time trial last Thursday, becomes the first male gold medal winner for Wales at these Commonwealth Games and will carry his country's flag at the closing ceremony later on Sunday.

"Winning is unbelievable, I never expected it," he told BBC Sport. "Coming off the Tour de France, I was tired at end of that. I thought it would be a massive challenge to get a result here but the motivation was there.

"I was buzzing to compete for Team Wales. I just got stuck in and it couldn't have got any better.

"Carrying the flag tonight will be a massive honour. That is just as good as winning a race and that means a lot to me and my family."

Bauer crossed the line in second for silver, while Thwaites took bronze.

In the women's event, Lizzie Armitstead, who won Great Britain's first medal at the 2012 Olympics in London, picked up one of England's last of the Commonwealths as she claimed gold on the streets of Glasgow.

Armitstead had won silver in Delhi four years ago, and led home retiring compatriot Emma Pooley and Ashleigh Pasio of South Africa on Sunday.

Over at the Hydro, England's netball players failed to bounce back from a last-gasp semi-final defeat to New Zealand as they were beaten to the bronze medal 52-48 by Jamaica, before Australia triumphed 58-40 over their near neighbours to top the podium.

And there proved to be something of a gold rush for Australia on the final day of the Games.

The country's men claimed hockey gold with a 4-0 demolition of India at the National Hockey Centre, while England won bronze with a shootout victory over New Zealand.

Rachael Grinham and David Palmer made it a trio of golds for Australia with victory over the English pairing of Peter Barker and Alison Waters in the squash mixed doubles final, before the men's doubles also went Australia's way courtesy of Palmer and Cameron Pilley.

There was to be no final-day success for hosts Scotland as Alan Clyne and Harry Leitch lost to Daryl Selby and James Willstrop of England in the men's doubles.

England were already assured of top spot on the medal table and were guaranteed another gold and silver in the badminton on Sunday, with the husband-and-wife pairing of Chris and Gabrielle Adcock beating compatriots Chris Langridge and Heather Oliver in the mixed doubles final.

Malaysia registered two more golds with victory in both the men's and women's doubles, while India's Kashyap Parupalli and Canada's Michelle Li topped the podium in the men's and women's singles respectively.
