Olaide Mutairu, a member of a notorious robbery gang, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command, in Ilasamaja, Lagos.

According to Punch, Mutairu, who is only 27 years old, is reportedly among a gang of robbers, which has been terrorising bank customers in the area.

Luck ran out on him and his gang, during a recent heist which went south.

A police source confirmed that the suspect is the leader of the robbery gang. He was arrested after a tip-off.

“On Friday, June 17, we got a tip-off that some robbers had been sighted in the area. Some of our officers mounted motorcycles and went to the street where the suspects were purportedly sighted.”

“When the robbers saw the police team, they opened fire on them. The police returned same and overpowered them.”

“Three of them, who fell off the motorcycle quickly ran across the express and joined a crowd. We had to cease fire to avoid civilian casualties.”

Punch reported that the battle against the criminals was facilitated by motorcyclists in the area, who have been given a bad reputation because of the activities of the robbers.

A commercial motorcyclist said, “We got a bad name because of these robbers, who I believe operate on information. They always go after bank customers.”

“When we saw the suspicious movements of the gang that Friday, we alerted the police. Our suspicion proved accurate when the robbers started shooting.”

Mutairu however denied any involvement in the robbery. He said he was on his way to a location when he was attacked by the police.
