Fake visa racketeer arrested in Onitsha

A 31-year old from Imo State who specialized in visa racketeering, providing his unsuspecting victims with fake Visa and other related travelling documents, has been arrested by the Anambra State Police Command

A man from Imo State who specialized in visa racketeering, providing his unsuspecting victims with fake Visa and other related travelling documents, has been arrested by the Anambra State Police Command, Punch reports.

The 31-year-old was reportedly tracked down by police detectives attached to Okpoko Police Division in Ogbaru Local Government Area of the State.

His arrest, according to the source, was sequel to a complaint lodged at Okpoko Police Station by one of the victims.

According to a police source, the suspected visa racketeer had allegedly lured his victim to Onitsha from his base in Abuja, through the instant messaging app, WhatsApp.

It was gathered that the suspect had about three years ago, allegedly obtained N150, 000 from the victim and bolted to unknown destination.Luck, however ran out on him when the victim allegedly mounted serious man-hunt for him by extending the phone number of the suspect to one of his sisters who started chatting with him on WhatsApp.

Getting attracted by the charm of his chat buddy, the suspected fake visa vendor drove from Abuja, to Onitsha to catch with the WhatsApp lady.

Unbeknown to him, he was walking into a trap.

He was ambushed as soon as he got into Onitsha.

It was learnt that in an attempt to arrest him, he made several efforts to escape but with the special assistance of the men of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC who were controlling traffic at the Niger Bridge-head, he was finally tracked down.

A police source who confirmed the arrest, told newsmen that the suspect had made a confessional statement to the effect that he actually collected money from his victim, adding that he had before the money was given to him, issued a man who introduced him to the victim with genuine visa and was not paid hence he seized the amount given to him in place of the first visa issued without pay.

He said:

“My brother, I am a drop out of Lagos State University, LASU, and I dropped-out at 300 level and I was studying Mass Communication before I and over 30 other students were expelled from the campus for our involvement in cultism. I have promised to balance them back and I have N50, 000 in my account. I will leave my car in the police station and go to look for the remaining balance."
