Parents dump baby on sidewalk so they can grab 'some shots'

A Florida couple are accused of leaving their 3-month-old son alone outside a bar while they were busy getting drunk inside.

Antonio Nieves, 28, and his fiancee, Amy Schafer, 27, of Ocala, Flordia, have been charged with child neglect without great bodily harm. Nieves is also facing a domestic battery charge for allegedly punching Schafer in the face, Daily Mail reports.

According to a police report at the time of their arrest, at around 1.30am Tuesday Schaffer and Nieves headed to O'Malleys Sports Bar in Margate with their infant in tow, but the manager of the establishment told them the boy could not stay there because it is against the law.

Because nothing was going to come between them and their bar outing, Schafer said she took her son outside and left him on the sidewalk in his car carrier.

According to her, she would then check on him every five minutes and then go back inside to do shots with her husband.

The mother claimed that another bar patron was keeping an eye on her son as well.

The pair were arrested later that morning when police got a call from a private residence on Northwest 27th Street about an intruder.

The responding officer found Antonio Nieves standing with his baby outside the home, where neither he nor Schafer lives.

Police said the man had been pounding on the door and making futile attempts to unlock it with a set of keys that did not match. Nieves reportedly had bloodshot eyes and smelled of alcohol, Daily Mail gathered.

Police found Schafer in a similar state waiting for her fiance in their car. According to the report, the woman' face was injured, and she told police that Nieves had punched her at least three times for hurling an insult at him.

The couple's child has been taken into the custody of Child Protective Services, where he is expected to remain up to six months as caseworks search for a suitable caretaker.

According to Schafer's Facebook page, she also has an older son. Nieves, who works as a handyman, has a young daughter from a past relationship living in Puerto Rico.
