A 37-year-old commercial driver who was arrested for illegal oil bunkering has revealed that he got into the act to pay for the hospital bill of his wife who gave birth through caesarean section.
A commercial driver who was arrested alongside three other suspects of illegal oil bunkering has revealed that he engaged in the criminal act to pay for his wife’s hospital bills.
37-year-old Jamiu Sittu who hails from Ogun State, told Punch that he recently joined the illegal oil bunkering gang so he could get money to pay the hospital bills of his wife who gave birth to a baby boy in July, 2014 through caesarean section.
Jamiu Sittu and three others- Bolaji Isila, Sola Ogunlade and Semiu Bello- were arrested by men of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Lagos State on Friday, January 16 around Eyita Sabo in the Ikorodu area of Lagos.
52 gallons each containing 50 litres of petrol were recovered by men of the NSCDC during the arrest.
Jamiu Sittu said he needed the sum of N150, 000 to pay for the surgery and had paid up to N80, 000 before he was arrested.
“I started the business three months ago. I am a commercial driver, but I was not earning enough. I was actually pushed into it so that I could balance my wife’s hospital bill on time. We got married in October, 2013,” Jamiu told Punch.
Another of the suspect, 47-year-old Bolaji Isila, said he started the illegal oil bunkering business because his mechanic work was not enough to take care of his family of three.
Sola Ogunlade said joblessness forced him into the business while Semiu Bello revealed that he came to repair Shittu’s car when he was apprehended.
