I don't watch Big Brother Naija, not because of anything personal, I just don't watch most reality TV shows.
Big Brother Naija shows we have come a long way
The tiny backlash over this year's Big Brother Naija shows that Nigerians are slightly changing their attitude towards sex related content.
However, I know what practically goes in the 'House' thanks to Twitter. Thousands of Nigerians are always tweeting about this contestant or that contestant and the latest thing happening there.
Thanks to the continuous and relentless stream of info, I know there has been a lot of kissing, groping, caressing and explicit activities going on. The clips and photos are free for all to see even if you are not hooked up to DSTV.
I have observed that while some hot and wild things have gone down in the house, the negative backlash from Nigeria's hypocritical and conservative core has been mellow.
Over the years, whenever Big Brother comes to town, the righteous and proper sect whip up a frenzy about how the show is immoral and promotes wrong values. Opinion articles spring up in newspapers and shadowy protest groups threaten to yank the show off the air.
The contestants are also lambasted for being a part of the reality show. Remember Beverly Osu? When she was in Big Brother Africa, she was dragged by Nigerians for her explicit acts in the House.
It seems these people have finally found an answer to their righteous indignation- the TV remote. From the cold backlash that Big Brother Naija has received so far, we can come to the conclusion that the Nigerian conservatives now understand that their remote can control what pops up on their TV screens.
A lot of 'immoral' things have gone on in Big Brother Naija and normally the conservatives would have had sore throats by now but their relative indicates the progress we are making as a society no matter how small especially in regards to sex.
What another person does with his or her life is their business. Also, you cannot force your moral values on an individual or society. Back in the day, Nigerians would bash the reality show but watch it secretly, which is a trademark of our hypocrite ways. Now, we don't care. People are watching Big Brother Naija for the sexual content and we are cool with that.
