Suya Consumption Could Lead To Cancer - Nutrition Professor

Could suya be a cancer causing agent?

If reports are anything to go by, popular Nigerian snack, Suya could infact be a cancer-causing agent.

This is according to Professor of Nutrition and Director of Academic Planning at the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State - Ignatius Onimawo as reported by Vanguard newspaper.

According to the good professor, the process in which suya is prepared causes the formation of toxic compounds known as Heterocyclic Amines, which are carcinogenic compounds; that is cancer causing compounds.

In his words:

“During preparation of suya, the  meat is cooked over an open fire, and oils from the meat undergo complex chemical reactions that produce toxins that are carcinogenic (cancer-causing) in nature.

Meat cooked over open flame often causes the formation of toxic compounds known as Heterocyclic Amines, HCAs, which are carcinogenic compounds. The more well-done a meat is cooked, the higher concentration of carcinogenic HCAs can form. “

To counter this, he therefore advised consuming suya with onions as they are powerful antioxidants  that  effectively stop the oxidative process caused by consumption of suya. He therefore encouraged eating suya with onions and other vegetables.
