Bukola, the sister of Funmi Odusina, one of the victims who drowned at Elegushi beach has lamented over the death of her sister.
Sister of victim laments her death
Odushina's sister lamented the absence of safety personnel at the beach and the rejection of the victims at the hospital.
According to Bukola, her late sister died with all her dreams of becoming a philanthropist, an ambassador and a mechanised farmer.
Funmi died on Sunday, June 5, 2016, with a school colleague, Adesola Ogunmefun.
They were both attending the birthday party of a friend named Bolu, who narrowly survived the incident.
Bukola expressed her disappointment over the lack of safety personnel at the beach. She believes the victims would have been saved if survival measures were in place.
“They were (Funmi and Ogunmefun) vibrant with a very bright future. Funmi had a lot of dreams and both of us were very close. She was a manager and was very intelligent. We have taken the loss in good faith. They were not swimming when the tide came and they were not drunk.
“Shutting down the beach cannot relieve the family of the pain and we are not going to take any legal action.
“But we want the government to inspect the beach and others around the state to ensure that proper safety precautions are put in place.”
“Lives are lost on the beach every week. There should be a law that will mandate the presence of life guards, an alarm system and other facilities in the beach.”
“Although they were taken to the private hospital inside the vehicle of the Lagos State Ambulance Service, they were rejected.”
“What makes the incident sadder was that it happened on the day the family was to have a very important event, daddy’s birthday.”
According to Punch, the deceased are graduates from Covenant University, Otta, and are said to rounding up their Master’s programme in International Relations, at the University of Lagos, Akoka.
