Tenant docked for beating up landlord in Lagos

A tenant in Lagos has been charged to court for allegedly attacking her landlord because he warned her against smoking Indian Hemp.

A 24-year-old female tenant, Doris Okafor, has been charged before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly assaulting her landlord at House 43, 4th Avenue, Road 403, Festac Town, in the state, because he cautioned her about smoking Indian Hemp and bringing people of questionable characters to his house.

According to the court records, Okafor, a student, had connived with four others who are now at large, went to the residence of her landlord, Godwin Ulom who resides in Lekki area of the state and allegedly beat him up, injuring him in the process.

The police prosecutor in the case, Sgt. Daniel Ighodalo, told the court that Okafor and her partners in crime had stormed Ulom's residence at No. 66, Emmanuel Street, Lekki Phase 1, on March 18 and had a confrontation with him during which they beat him to a pulp.

"The student assaulted the landlord after he had a confrontation with her for smoking hemp as well as her alleged association with persons of questionable character.

The tenant came to the landlord’s residence with four men suspected to be hoodlums to beat him up."

Ighodalo noted that the offences contravened Sections 171 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011, carrying a three year jail term.

Okafor pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge and the Magistrate, Olaitan Ajayi, granted her bail in the sum of N20, 000 while the case was adjourned to May 18 for mention.
