Ice Prince might just have found his perfect comeback song with “Excellency”

‘Excellency’, Ice Prince's new single, has the quality to be that song to stimulate a renaissance.

Ice Prince won the "Award for Best International Act (Africa)" at the 2013 BET Awards.

Has Ice Prince’s music mojo been turned off? Or has it just been a function of some factors not aligning to give the singer a hit?

With a profile that far supersedes the actual work he has put out in the past two years, ex-Chocolate City swag king has had trouble leading the charts (or the dance floors) with substandard releases, which both fail to capture the pop music enthusiasts, and also further alienates the Hip-hop crowd that are yet to disown him as one of their own.

This year, his last release ‘Chike’ was the summary of his career in the past two years. Much spark, but no durable substance. The singer seemed to have lost his way, as his chase for relevance via pop sounds, has skewed his essence beyond recognition. Ice Prince’s music has been stripped of any style, substance and cognitive value. The only Ice Prince in his songs was his vocals. Ice Prince’s music got reduced to his vocals.

But he has an album on the burner, and this is his almost his last chance hurl his fortunes back on track. ‘Excellency’, his new single has the quality to be that song to stimulate the renaissance. Featuring DJ Buckz, Ice Prince takes out another missile from his pop box, ignoring Hip-hop. This is a man who has stated his case – ‘I am a singer’- and he is chasing it.

Producer Illkeyz helms the production on this one, and he comes through with a rotating, syncopated beat that switches at every turn to inspire dynamic dancing. The drum kicks on the song are thumping, almost jarring, with accompanying sirens which blare at full speed.

Ice Prince provides a stirring delivery, with a hint of patois to make it unforgettable. The lyrics are just enough to glide over you, until you get to the part where you have to scream ‘Excellency’, a catchword to sear the jam deep into your brain.

Oh, and there’s also DJ Buckz. The South African, who did do the magic on the instrumentals too. You need to hear this right now.
