Emerging singer shows potential at her showcase

Newcomer Tolani shows that she has a professional edge to her singing career.

The purpose of the showcase was to introduce her to music fans and taste makers in Nigeria. It was an avenue for people to see her artistry.

The show was initially billed to start at 8 pm but didn't kick off till 9:30 pm. Despite the Nigerian factor of starting late, the night was a short and crisp night of good live music.

Hosted by media personality Folu Storms, the event was kicked off by the R&B heartthrob Funbi who performed a new song and his official debut single 'Hallelujah'. Coupled with a couple of other tracks, Funbi gave us a glimpse why many music critics have been raving about him for years.

After his performance, the lady of the night Tolani came up on stage with her three-man band, Daniel on the keys, Marcus on the bass and Iman on drums.

The first song she performed was 'Ready For Me', a song with a soulful vibe with a bit of trap cadence. This was followed by 'Anything', a song with a Naija pop bounce.

Her third song for the evening was 'Come Down'. On this song, she plays with the elements of nature with her lyrics with a line like "If I was a moth and you were the fire."

After the first three thumping songs, Tolani slowed down her set to do a cover of 'You Know I'm No Good'' by Amy Winehouse. Next up was the most recent (unreleased) song 'Please Me' produced by E Kelly. On this dancehall pop track, she sang "Fire, give me the ting...I like the way you and my body combine."

This track is obviously flirty and adult-themed maybe that's why she jokingly told her father that she didn't write the lyrics. Her father, by the way, is Nigerian billionaire Femi Otedola.

Tolani performed 'Tenderoni', her next single featuring Skales. She gave a good performance of this track but Skales fell flat with his performance.

The last track of the night was the first song she ever wrote. It's an unreleased track featuring Jamaican dancehall legend Beenie Man. This song ended the night on a good note.

Short and crisp, Tolani revealed her years of hard work and performing with a live band. Her performance was professional and neat. If this the beginning of her career, we can't wait to see what she will have to offer in the years to come.
