"#AndSeeThatsTheThing" about Dej Loaf

From her confidence to her melodic tone, the 25 year-old MC makes it all look so straightforward.

#AndSeeThatsTheThing

Since ‘Try me’ hit the airwaves, it’s remained one of my favourite rap songs till date, so it was pretty exciting listening to Dej Loaf’s latest rap/hip-hop project titled “#AndSeeThatsTheThing”.

The American rapper has this one-of-a-kind style of delivery unlike any other femcee in the game right now. While most of them are dropping lines like lines like “bang, bang, bang”, she gives up her verses like an effortless stream flowing down a riverbank.

On her debut EP, it’s obvious the lyricist has selected beats to match her unique inflection. Attention everyone, Dej Loaf has arrived and is here to stay. On the opening track called ‘Desire’, she raps about taking on the world and her ambition. She sings:

“I can't hold back I gotta live life

Go and get everything that I desire

Why you playin' with stones?

If you don't like fire

What's the point of playin' roles rose

If you ain't gon' own the title”.

The competition is about to get real. Already, the Michigan-born artist bagged two nominations at the 2015 BET Awards in the Best New Artist and Best Female Hip-hop categories.

From rapping about her hunger to be the best, Loaf turns the page and talks about the work she’s had to put to be here today on ‘Been grinding’. She also raps about the problems she’s been dealing with since been put on centre stage.

She may be petite but you probably don’t want to mess with her. Dej and Big Sean tell their haters to ‘’ on their collaborative track, which samples DJ Clent’s ‘’. Male or female, this is a song guaranteed to get you dancing.

The six-track extended play features Future on ‘Hey there’ and in his usual Future Hendrix-fashion, he brings on his auto-tune touch. I quite like how the Detroit native shows her tender side on ‘Butterflies’. This song is bound to stir up memories of the last major crush you had or the feeling of being in love.

With fame comes criticism and Miss Loaf is aware of this. On ‘We winnin’, she harmonizes:

“Spill my name in the game

I know they want me to fail

Tell'em I'm lit, tell'em I ain't going nowhere

Know you ain't light it up, put your lighters in the air

We winnin', we winnin' keep that hater shit over there.”

In spite of it all she stays confident. What an excellent way to close the EP. She maybe in the limelight now, but from her lyrics, the rapper clearly remains in her own world and doesn’t have a problem with it.

American hip-hop magazine XXL made the right call choosing her as part of its 2015 Freshman Class. From her make-up to her fashion style to her melodic tone, the 25 year-old MC makes it all look so straightforward. I absolutely love her confidence and how she doesn’t try to fit in. “#AndSeeThatsTheThing” is simply a revelation of who she is and where she is going.

Best songs: Butterflies, Desire, We Winnin’
