Lánre's "Human" EP is a soulful collection of positivity

A 4-track beauty, “Human” contains a slight positivity that permeates its echo in Lánre’s strong vocal performance, backed by omnipresent African-tinged harmonies.

Born in England (Stoke-on-Trent), but raised through her early life in Nigeria, Lánre has honed her art through performing. First she sang in school as a wide-eyed talented 8-year old, before falling in love with the guitar. That love apparently has no end.

In 2002, Lanre showed up on the music scene, touring the world as part of the UK-based gospel collective GK REAL and has since developed her own brand of acoustic folk-oriented soul, releasing her debut album ‘Pen Voyage Chapter One: Singing For Change’ in 2011. The new EP ‘Human’ comes on the heels of her 2014 predecessor, “Home”.

Armed with a piercing voice, made incisive by her deep, encompassing subjects, the performer sings through hope, as she provides an immersive collection of songs which relate to the mundane life. There are struggles, celebrations, low points and victories. Opening up with the choral promethean title track, ‘Human’, positivity comes through into a place riddled with darkness. ‘We are all broken, so that light will come in’.

The guitar-heavy ‘Fire’ is a yearning lover’s cry for reciprocation and total commitment, using imagery. “Will you light a fire for me", she sings out to the distant backdrop of rattles, and chilling spaces. ‘Dreams’ is an inspirational call which carries more traditional African elements, with her Yoruba storytelling influences making a huge appearance. ‘My soul’ which is inspired by the tragic event that took place in Chibok, Borno State, Nigeria, where over 200 school girls were abducted by terrorists, is a haunting piece that provokes deep thoughts of beautiful despair washed away by a will for victory.
