Lamboginny tests the waters for substance on “Salt” album

Almost all the records here are engaging, and intrusive, designed with the aim of knocking you off your feet.

Album - SaltArtist - LamboginnyRecord Label - Lambo Music (2017)Duration: 56 minutes

Lamboginny has put in the work required to have a successful career. And although he hasn’t hit the heights of commercial success that musicians in his genre aspire to, he has scored enough humanitarian points to be regarded as one who has impacted on society.

His charity works in Nigerian prisons have brought a new dimension to blending compassion with the art to affect lives positively. He has also served as an ambassador for NDLEA, Nigeria’s narcotics battling arm, where he has used his music to encourage safe lifestyles and push youths towards shunning harmful reactional substances.

Music for a higher purpose is a respected form of expression, after all, music is essentially a labour of love and expression, before it is commoditized. Lamboginny is commoditizing his right now. It’s a welcome move for a man who has chased selflessness as a vocation, and allowed his art contribute to lighting the world.

How does he fare on this? Not bad at all. Almost all the records here are engaging, and intrusive, designed with the aim of knocking you off your feet. Stomping title singled ‘Salt’ draws from the interacting rhythms of Afrobeat, Korede Bello provides a wholesome assist on ‘Kokor’, while things go outdoors to the streets of Lagos for ‘Read my lips’.Olamide adds credibility to the number. Elsewhere, there’s introspective emotion on ‘Ghetto boy dream’ and ‘Heal me’. While the premise of ‘Ore mi’ and ‘One Good friend’ are simple, but carries his relationship-inspired efforts.

Sometimes it’s difficult to come to terms with the delivery on some records, but the swing of the project which scrapes through multiple genres carries through to the end, and provides considerable high moments to hold on to.
