New TV series to premiere in 2017

'Star Trek' is set to return to the small screen, as CBS has confirmed that a new TV series is being developed.

 

CBS Television Studios announced today, Monday, November 2, 2015, that it will debut a new 'Star Trek' television series in January 2017.

The upcoming new 'Star Trek ' series will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.

Alex Kurtzman, who co-wrote and produced 2009's 'Star Trek,' and 2013's 'Star Trek Into Darkness.' will serve as the executive producer for the new series.

'Star Trek', which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2016, debuted its first original series on September 8, 1966, and aired for three seasons.

The new TV series is not related to the upcoming film 'Star Trek Beyond ,' which is scheduled for a summer 2016 release.
