Bollywood actor sentenced to 5 years in jail for a 2002 hit-and-run case

Famous Bollywood actor, Salman Khan, has been sentenced to five years in jail for a 2002 hit and run case filed against him.

 

An Indian court in Mumbia has sentenced undefinedfive years in jail for drunkenly driving over a group of sleeping homeless people, killing one person and injuring four.

A Mumbai court on Wednesday found the 49-year-old actor guilty of  culpable homicide.

Salman had claimed that he was not behind the wheels. According to the actor, his driver, Ashok Singh, was driving the Toyota Land Cruiser that ran over the victims.

The judge, D W Deshpande, dismissed his account, saying the actor was driving the car and was under the influence of alcohol at the time.

"You were driving the car; you were under the influence of alcohol," judge said to actor.

According to Indian television channels, the actor broke down inside court as the guilty verdict was announced.

Salman who is one of Bollywood's bankable actors have starred in movies like 'Dabangg', 'Ready', 'Bodyguard', 'Ek Tha Tiger' among others.

According to Indian Expres,  the actor has been granted two-day interim bail by the Bombay High Court, hours after his sentence was read.

The High Court will hear Salman’s appeal on May 8.
