Review of 'Shuga' season 4

MTV Shuga returned and we were happy. Then the season ended and we were sad. There are some of us who are still patiently waiting for more.

Season four was two episodes shorter than season three which was made up of eight episodes. The main purpose of MTV Shuga is to educate young people on sexual and reproductive health. You absolutely have to give it up to the entire MTV Shuga team: cast, crew, the guys in the main office and their supporters. Shuga has been able to not just entertain us, but also advise and educate so many of us on several issues without beating around the bush, making us uncomfortable or being judgemental.

On this new season, it seems as though everyone’s picked up and living happily or so it seems.

Sophie has repented from dating sugar daddies and is now in a relationship with Leo. Princess is pregnant, living with HIV and hoping Solomon will come back to her. Weki is dating a new girl at school and can’t seem to find the right time to tell her about his status. Nii has found a younger girl to prey on. And Femi is dating a new girl who knows about his status and is still deeply in love with him.

New characters are introduced. There’s Sheila (Femi’s new girlfriend), Eniola (Princess friend and confidant), Leila, Mary and Bongi who are in Weki’s school, Ozzy (Shelia’s brother) and Sheila’s family. There’s a cameo from Patoranking and Eva who appear as themselves.

The location for this show was across Lagos. The series makes good use of the University of Lagos campus and Ember Creek in Ikoyi.

The scripting and direction of the movie is quite detailed from the use of language to the storyline.

Season four portrays realities of sexual and health issues in the Nigerian society. It covers the themes of living with AIDS, love, and sex. This season advocates that there are organizations and people who care for and counsel people on the matter.

The acting on Shuga is very convincing. Weki’s puppy love with Leila is all kinds of cute!

One of the best characters on the show is Sophie. She is fire! Dorcas Shola Fapson’s interpretation of this role deserves an award. The banter between her and her sister would have you convinced the actors were really related.

There are so many unanswered questions though. Where did Bongi come from? What’s her story? What about Princess and Sophie’s papa? What happened to Ekene?

I’ll be honest season 4 for was great, but it lacked the melodrama and suspense season 3 had. Season 3 had some of us biting our nails, talking to TV/laptop screens and clutching out abdomens when Sophie got shot.

All the same, this new season was impressive, engaging and stimulating. MTV Shuga, can I have some more?
