"I think Nigerians are bigger than comedy"

The top three highest grossing movies falling under the comedy genre. They are Wedding Party, Trip To Jamaica, and 30 Days In Atlanta.

In an interview with Broadway TV, Nollywood superstar actress Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, who is set to return to the big screen after a three-year break, spoke about her box office expectations for the movie "Alter Ego," considering the recent influx of comedy movies in the cinemas.

According to the veteran star, Nigerians are more than comedy movies and would appreciate an intelligent movie if it's well done.

"I hope Nigerians would prove the world wrong that all we want to just do is laugh in the cinema," the actress said.

"Of late, that has been the story, that, 'oh you know , people just don't want to think, people don't want anything that would make them remember their woes or think about anything that's happening in the society. They just want to laugh out their sorrows and go away."

"But, I think Nigerian are bigger than that. I think we are very intelligent people. I think if you give them something that makes them feel good, and makes them feel intelligent and something that's worth their time, I feel like they will come out to support it."

Hoping Nigerians will come out to support "Alter Ego," the actress said, "so, I pray that Nigerians will come out and support this movie, just so that we can also prove that all Nigerians are good for is not just to watch comedy films and 'feel good movies' and walk away.

"We like intelligent movies if it's well done."

Omotola also hopes the movie will pave way for the return of drama films in the Nigerian cinema.

"I think a movie came out and did very well, that's why everybody started going into comedy. I hope "Alter Ego" will do very well; enough for people to go back and start making real drama."

The movie which features the actress as Adaora Igwe, a lawyer who specializes in defending less privileged abuse victims, is directed by Moses Inwang and produced by Esther Eyibio.

"Alter Ego" debuts on July 21, 2017.
