CEAN reveals why film exhibitors reject horror movies

According to CEAN chairman, horror movies are not as profitable as comedies or romantic comedies.

The Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN) has revealed why the horror genre never make it to the big screens.

In a recent interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), CEAN Chairman Patrick Lee detailed how the association first takes into consideration all guidelines set by the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB).

"In selecting movies to be shown in cinemas, we take into consideration the rules and regulations that operate in the country, within the purview of the NFVCB," Lee said.

Speaking on horror films, Lee disclosed that the genre did not make as much profit as other popular genres.

“We reject horror movies because they don’t sell, unlike the romantic comedy and action movies, that are highly marketable, so the type of movie also matters.

“Not all movies are meant for the cinemas. Some are for television, while some others are for streaming platforms.

“In all selection, we are mindful of the regulations that guide the censors’ board. If any movie goes against the dictates of the board, we don’t accept such movies,” he added.

Lee further highlighted that films containing homosexual content, smoking, or drugs, were not acceptable in line with the NFVCB guidelines.
