OJUJU director, C.J. Fiery Obasi, is the winner of the 2015 AMVCA 'Trailblazer' award.
On Saturday night, Up-and-coming OJUJU director, C.J. Fiery Obasi, received the AMVCA 2015 Trailblazer Award, his third major recognition from the industry in less than 5 months.
The Trailblazer Award is the only AMVCA trophy for which there are no official nominees, it is always a highlight of the evening as it comes as a total surprise to all, winner included.
“It’s an electrifying feeling,” said C.J. “I was invited to the event and I just came to chill, lay back and celebrate African cinema. But I heard my name! No feeling quite like it, I must say. It’s the stuff of dreams.”
The award was presented by 2013 Trailblazer Award Winner Actress Ivie Okujaiye, who stated that the award had opened doors for her and that she hoped it would do the same for this year’s winner.
C.J. busted into the scene at AFRIFF 2014 last November, where he won both the Best Nigerian Film Award for OJUJU, and The Restless Pitch competition.
OJUJU, a zombie thriller film which C.J. wrote and directed on a zero-budget, stars Gabriel Afolayan, Omowunmi Dada, and Kelechi Udegbe.
It screened at AFRIFF 2014, the Eko International Film Festival 2014, and the 2015 Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles, and will also be shown this year at the Shockproof Film Festival in Prague, and the New Voices in Black Cinema in New York.
C.J. is currently in production on his second feature film O-TOWN, a rags-to-riches-to-rags gangster story set in Owerri. He is represented by Restless Talent Management.
