President orders clampdown on piracy in Nollywood

He directed that perpetrators of copyright piracy, their sponsors and collaborators, be fished out and brought to justice.

 

President Muhammadu Buhari tasked law enforcement agencies to intensify effort in tackling piracy in the entertainment industry, to enable artistes get reward for their hardwork.

The president stated this in Abuja on Tuesday, July 14, after receiving a briefing from the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan and her Directors.

In a statement released by Femi Adesina, the Presidential Media aide, Buhari said, “Nollywood is making progress. We should work with them. Unless they are backed, they will be ruined by pirates who want to reap where they have not sowed.

"They have built an industry with their own sweat. It is therefore incumbent on us to give them the necessary support.”

Pulse recalls that filmmaker, Kunle Afolayan recently championed a peaceful protest against piracy in Nollywood and the entertainment industry in Nigeria as a whole.

The actor called for the 'walk against piracy' after his latest movie, October 1, was pirated.
