Big night for Alec Baldwin, Elisabeth Moss, others

Alec Baldwin's acceptance speech and the bashing of Donald Trump by the show host were some of the highlights of the event.

Show host Stephen Colbert, whose "The Late show With Stephen Colbert" got a nomination for the Variety Talk Series award played the role of anchor at the event staged at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

The night's first award saw John Lithgow win best supporting actor in a drama for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in Netflix’s “The Crown.”

This was followed by honours to the duo of Alexander Skarsgard and Laura Dern for supporting actor roles in a limited series in HBO’s "Big Little Lies."

Three decades old "Saturday Night Live" finally got recognition in the category of Variety Sketch Series. More awards from casts, Kate McKinnon and Alec Baldwin for Supporting Actress, Comedy and Supporting Actor, Comedy followed respectively.

Baldwin thrilled the audience in his acceptance speech which proved to be quite humorous and improved the tempo of excitement.

"I wanna thank my wife, my wife and I had three children in three years and we didn't have a child last year during the SNL season and I wonder if there's a correlation there. All you men out there, you put that orange wig on, it's birth control trust me,"  he said.

It was a third Emmy for the actor who made a big hit of his portrayal of Donald Trump on "Saturday Night Live".

A battle between HBO and Netflix in respect to who will score more awards for the night heralded the opening of the event.

Elisabeth Moss made away with one of the big wins at the occasion, bagging the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role in "The Handmaid's Tale."

She muscled out Viola Davis who was nominated in the category for law and crime drama series, "How To Get Away With Murder."
