Baba Suwe to Pocket N25m

An Ikeja High Court has ordered the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to pay popular actor and comedian Babatunde Omidina aka Baba Suwe the sum of N25M (Twenty-five million naira.) The order was given this morning Thursday, November 24, 2011 by presiding Judge Justice Yetunde Idowu, who cited that the detention of Baba Suwe by the NDLEA ‘was not justified’

In addition to the money ordered to be paid, Justice Idowu also directed the law enforcement agency to publish a statement of apology in two widely read Nigerian newspapers. The choice of the newspapers is to be agreed by both counsels.

Baba Suwe dragged NDLEA to court and sued them for 100 million naira damages for his unlawful detention and subsequent  public humiliation. It will be recalled that the actor was arrested by the Agency on his way to France on October 12, 2011 and spent 24 days in custody on suspicions of ingesting substances suspected to be cocaine. A court had ordered his release on bail after the agency could not find  banned drug on him or in his excretions.

Congratulations Sir! Now we have followed your story to this point, please do not hesitate to let us know when the money (N25  million naira) is eventually paid. This we hope will teach our ‘over sabi’ (overzealous) NDLEA officers and other law enforcement agencies how to treat not just accused persons but fellow human beings.
