The 2016 Academy Awards nominations were announced on Thursday, January 14, 2015, featuring all white actors in the four acting categories.

The obvious lack of diversity and absence of a black actor nominee has been a controversial topic since the announcement.

"Selma" director, Ava Duvernay, has more to say on the snubs. Speaking during a Sundance event, the filmmaker who was snubbed in 2015 for her movie "Selma," said she'd rather use another word than "diversity."

“I feel it’s a medicinal word that has no emotional resonance, and this is a really emotional issue. It’s emotional for artists who are women and people of color to have less value placed on our worldview.”

Speaking to New York Times, the director said "There’s a belonging problem in Hollywood. Who dictates who belongs? The very body who dictates that looks all one way.”

Commenting on the recent changes announced by the Academy to promote diversity, Duvernay said;

“Change has to happen, it has to happen with the people who dictate who belongs. It’s disconcerting to hear people say that shouldn’t change. That’s the very reason it should.”
