Who doesn't want to marry an 18-yr old?

A humorous, enlightening view of celebrities and celeb life in Nigeria from the mind of a sarcastic writer.

Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II

Really I do not understand the fuss being raised over the Emir of KanoMuhammadu Sanusi II marrying an 18 year old woman (noticed I used woman instead of girl)?

So, the Emir of Kano according to reports got himself a new bride, an 18 year old woman Sa’adatu Barkindo-Musdafa who happens to be the daughter of Lamido of Adamawa, Muhammadu Barkindo-Musdafa. Lol! This looks like something from the - arranged royal marriages. That's not the focus today so let's move on.

Now when this piece of news hit the digital gossip square of the 21st century (Twitter) all hell was let loose. The Twitter overlords, Twitter Nazis, keyboard gangstas and the feminist, anti-patriarchal amazons started shooting their 140-capped opinions about the marriage. Before we could say 'Google!' the hashtag #ChildNotBride started trending.

This is my problem with social media. There is a saying that goes "never underestimate stupid people in large numbers." I think every social media app should have this saying as a caution sign. How can an 18 year old woman be called a child? Like seriously guys, come on when did common sense fly out of the window? In case you do not know, an 18 year old anywhere in the world is legal, legal to drive, legal to vote, and legal to drink. I know you conservative people won't like this, but an 18 year old is old enough in the eyes of the law to have sex, anytime, anywhere and anyhow. So the argument that an 18 year old isn't ready for marriage is crap.

If you think an 18 year old is still a child then you haven't been out lately. Have you seen 18 year old chicks these days? OMG! Go to any mall in Lagos, and it is littered with 18 year old chicks that are in full bloom. An 18 year old chick is hotter than a 29 year old chick. Awon boys am I lying? So, tell me why a King shouldn't choose the freshest female specimen from the pick of the litter. No King wants to marry an old chick with a body count hitting fifty. Better to pick a young woman with a count of 5-10 if you ask me.

Let's throw away the moral/religious crap shall we? The Bible doesn't outlaw a man from marrying an 18 year old woman, neither does the Qu'aran. So let's leave God out of this. It is not immoral, neither is it a sin. This is for the hypocrites, don't act as if you have never looked at an 18 year old guy or chick in a sexual way before.

It's Nigeria's special brand of feminists that made so much noise about this marriage. Don't get me wrong, feminism is a movement that everyone should embrace. Society is highly unbalanced and favours men too much. I believe in the ideals of feminism but a small section of the 'Aggrieved Sisters of Twitter' have hijacked this beautiful movement. They will tell you an 18 year old woman shouldn't be married because she has her life in front of her, has a lot to achieve, and marriage should not be used to hold her back or seen as an achievement.

Well hello sister, who says a woman can't be married and have a good career? It seems the feminists on Naija Twitter think that marriage will hold you back from having a good career. Crap. There are millions of Nigerian women that have good homes and good careers. Because you can't do it don't rock someone's boat. Ladies should stop projecting what they consider the shortcomings of their relationships on other people. It is not fair. Instead of boring us with your relationship woes focus on the real issues that feminism should be dealing with- widows' rights, female genital mutilation, trying to abolish underage house helps, VVF etc. They shouldn't use their data for noise.

And check this out, if the tables were turned and a 50 year old woman is publicly going out with an 18 year old guy these feminists would love it. We no go heard word again. They will call her #badbitch and #hotmama but when an old man marries an 18 year old all hell is let loose from the island of Lesbos.

Ranting about the Emir's marriage is hypocrisy at the end of the day. The young woman is made. She will get a degree and have kids for an Emir. What more tops that? These are the real relationship goals, and not some fake inspirational poster our aunties on Twitter will make you believe. As a matter of fact I will choose an 18 year old when I marry. Kanu Nwakwo did it, and there was no fuss then. Why? Remember what I said about social media and stupid people in a large numbers? Exactly!
