Media celeb is successful against all odds

Toke Makinwa keeps on going, and is building her empire slowly as her critics continue to throw shots at her.

Yesterday the Rhythm 93.7 FM on-air-personality revealed that she was now the face of Mecran Cosmetics. “Signed. Sealed and delivered. #Bts of my shoot with @mecrancosmetics. This is the latest endorsement that Toke Makinwa has bagged, and the first she has nabbed this year. Chicken Republic, Pay Porte and Maggi are brands that have latched on to Toke Makinwa’s brand over the years.

Toke Makinwa no doubt is one of the hottest female celebrities in the country. Within the last few years she has been Nigeria’s ‘it girl’ like Bonang Matheba in South Africa. Her YouTube channel ‘’ boasts of 30,846 subscribers. The average number of views for her videos has 6 figures. Some have seven figures.

Last year Toke Makinwa was officially recognized as a YouTube star because of her very popular vlog. “Mama I'm a YouTube Star.... So much to be thankful for, YouTube is 10 and tonight I was celebrated at the "Evening with YouTube" event. I got to talk about my channel and share my growth on YouTube as a content provider.'

She further wrote, 'I feel really blessed, way up! God has brought so many of you into my life via my Vlog and it feels really good to be one of the very first Vloggers in Nigeria. Don't let anyone kill your dream, first they will laugh and at some point they will copy.

'Thanks to everyone who has ever watched, subscribed or liked any one of my videos, for the family I have built thru this ministry I say thank you God and thank you too. Yes, You. I think we should take TokeMomentsontheroad” wrote the OAP on her Instagram last year.

Media girl, hot female celeb and YouTube star. Toke Makinwa’s life and stardom is the stuff of the modern day female star’s dreams. However, behind the glamour, glitter and flashes comes the hate and drama in her life.

Eleven days before her YouTube recognition it was widely reported that Toke Makinwa’s husband Maje Ayida had allegedly impregnated his longtime mistress. Toke Makinwa’s marriage and this scandal was one of the biggest celebrity stories of 2015.

Toke Makinwa who uses her vlog to preach self-empowerment, self-love, feminism and dating tips to her numerous female fans was slated by her numerous critics when it seemed her marriage was cracking. She was dragged by many online for selling a lifestyle that does not exist in her home.

During the drama Toke Makinwa refused to reply her critics. She was quiet during the whole incident. Months later on her vlog she spoke on why she remained silent during this period.

In her first vlog of 2016 she said 2015 was amazing for her here, but admitted that she had ‘lows’ also. Speaking further she apologized to her fans for not speaking about her marital problems, and said she is the sort of person that likes to speak on certain issues when she has a clear head and is less emotional. She also said she does not like playing the victim.

At this point Toke Makinwa truly showed that she was a real celebrity who wouldn’t be moved by social media opinion and taunts which is rather refreshing in this era of celebrities needlessly clapping back at Internet trolls.

Even though her love life is still murky (she got back with her husband last year, but lately Toke Makinwa has been given hints that she is single) her career is booming.

The media personality has started 2016 in a great way by shooting a documentary ‘Lagos to London’ alongside Bespoke Luxury Shopper for UK’s Channel 4.

The ability of Toke Makinwa to turn the shade thrown at her into stepping stones has separated her from her contemporaries. But where does she get her drive from despite the hate?

On February 22, 2016 she revealed that a heartbreak gave her the determination and drive to excel.

“On this journey to success, it is important to inspire and motivate others so that on the days you feel less motivated, you too can find inspiration in another persons success story.

Today I remembered something deep. I used to like this one guy and he didn’t like me back like I liked him. He was into me but something was off. One day after he was breaking up with me yet again I asked him why he didn’t think we would work out?

He responded with ‘we are from different worlds’, he said his family had high expectations of him to bring home someone of a similar background to his and he couldn’t take us further because basically to him my daddy was a nobody.

I cried to bed that night but even in my tears, I developed a hunger for success. I never wanted to feel that way again so I vowed to make a name for myself. To make something out of my life. I got my shit together and started working hard because I already know what it feels like to be a ‘nobody’, I wanted to become more.

I work hard to be more, to inspire and to leave my name in the stars. I’m not quite there yet but I’m on a journey and I feel so blessed to love what I do. Radio/Tv/Vlogging and basically monetizing my life.

My career makes me dream and Prayer helps me key into my dreams. With faith I see that God rewards diligence. Today I’m still building, brick by brick, stone after stone, I will get there and you too can.”

Toke Makinwa definitely has the drive and determination to become even bigger than what she is right now. She has her eyes on the big picture, and she won’t let the hate hold her down.
