“I was diagnosed with lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy. That’s what my break was really about. I could've had a stroke," Selena told the mag. "I wanted so badly to say, ‘You guys have no idea. I’m in chemotherapy. You’re assholes.’ I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again," she said.

During an interview with radar Online in May 2014, Selena's grandfather, Ricardo Gomez Sr. also discussed her diagnosis. "She’s in treatment. She’s getting along pretty good. What worries [us] more is that she doesn’t know how to say no. She won’t take time for herself to relax, to eat well," he said at the time. Same time rumors suggested Selena entered a treatment facility to help her deal with pressures caused by both work and personal matters (ie. her split with Justin).

“I’m so f***ing nice to everybody, and everyone is so vile to me. I’ve been working since I was 7. I’ve been a UNICEF ambassador since I was 17. It’s so disappointing that I’ve become a tabloid story,” Selena further said.
