Nollywood veteran regrets decision to abandon marriage

Loneliness and a lack of access to companionship from a husband were some of the challenges she dealt with after leaving her marriage.

When her skill in acting is the subject, Rachael Oniga has left no room for doubters boasting of a successful career in film making but she is not without some regrets.

The actress separated from her husband in her youth which meant that she would embark on a lonesome journey as a single mother - a decision she wished she never made. The veteran who spoke in an interview published by Punch News on Sunday, November 5, 2017,noted that her choice deprived her of companionship, something she craves occasionally but providing comfort for her children seemed a better reward.

By remarrying, she risked exposing her offspring to ill-treatment from a prospective suitor. This would have defeated the idea that inspired her move away from her ex-husband who reportedly wedded another woman following their union.

Oniga would have young women follow a route different from hers when confronting marital issues. Unlike her, she prefers that they fight for the existence of their matrimony.

"I understand where you are going, but sometimes when a woman closes her heart, she will not give any relationship a chance. I was always on the defensive. I didn’t want any man to treat my children badly. I was working for my money and I put my kids in good schools. So, what do I need a man for?

"I felt all men just wanted was to see the beauty of a woman and walk away. With what my ex-husband did to me, you expect me to trust men again? Before we got separated, he was a good and ideal man. But he married another woman and I moved on. I do not regret leaving him because I sacrificed my life for my children, which makes me fulfilled and happy. But I miss the whole union thing, friendship and sharing things together. I have missed it all.

"My advice to young ladies is to keep and fight for their marriages. Perhaps, I was naïve; I never fought for what was mine, but I still thank God. We are in Africa, you fight for your life and that of your children first. Maybe that is why God has been merciful to me and my children," she stated.

The veteran seemed rather confusing when she noted never wishing to take back her husband even after his death. According to the light-skinned actress, she shuts the door on her emotions whenever she makes an important decision.

She however found fulfillment in the active role she played in the burial of her late husband who received a befitting attention during his deep-six.
