It’s a fast growing trend for Nigerian celebrities to be given political appointments.

Presently there are four Nigerian celebrities that have been given political offices. Let’s leave Desmond Elliot out of this scenario because he wasn't appointed by anyone, instead he ran for office.

Dayo Adeneye was made the Commissioner for Information & Strategy in Ogun state last year, and Kate Henshaw made Special Adviser, Liaison, Lagos to Cross River state.

Why is there a steady influx of celebrities in politics? Why are they being appointed to positions within state cabinets? There are four reasons why this has suddenly become a trend.

Firstly most celebrities are appointed because of goodwill and support. Some celebrities are appointed because they helped during the campaign process of the politician. And when the politician gets into office he or she appoints the celebrity who helped get him into office. Media veteran Dayo Adeneye falls into this category. He helped the Governor of Ogun state campaign during the elections, and for his hard work he was given the position of a commissioner.

Secondly politicians appoint celebrities because it will make them popular with the masses. Celebrities especially the actors and actresses are extremely popular. In a bid to look like a man of the people most politicians have found out that it is not a bad idea to have celebrities by their sides. When they win the elections they continue this relationship so as to remain relevant with the people or the masses.

Thirdly there have been strong rumours that some Governors allegedly give appointments to female celebrities that are their concubines. It is an allegation and no concrete evidence has come out yet to make this true. However there are strong allegations that female celebrities who end up with political appointments of strange job descriptions are in bed with the governors who appointed them. They still remain allegations.

Lastly some of these celebs who find their way to the state house have something genuine to contribute. Veteran Nigerian actor Richard Mofe Damijo was the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism in Delta State and his scorecard rates him highly for his input. So some celebrities are actually passionate about politics just like Desmond Elliot.

So we should not expect the trend celebs as commissioners or special advisers to die down anytime soon.  It is has come to stay for many reasons.
