If you observe gingerly you'd realize that most music superstars own a record label, those that don't, are shareholders in their respective Record labels.
The case of Davido is even more interesting because he has been involved in the management of not just one record label now, but two. Remember HKN? Yeah! Davido started out with HKN and the gang. The label had a number of other artists, including Shina Rambo, B-Red, Deekay and Danagog.
Although Davido's career kept growing, the rest of the gang could not get their careers off the background. At best, they had one/two songs that was/were helped by the generosity of radio stations and DJs. In fact, not many people would remember those songs now. As you'd expect, the walls holding the HKN gathering eventually cracked.
From this crack, DMW was pulled out. Davido decided to sign two interesting acts, Mayorkun and Dremo. Although both are talented, their styles are clearly different. While the loveable sound of Eleko launched Mayorkun's career, the high-pitched Fela song got Dremo the attention of fans. From the get-go, both artistes appeared to be on the success path. Although, Ichaba and Yonda joined at different times along the way, Mayorkun and Dremo stand ahead of them on the queue.
It is worth considering the success of DMW records in managing the careers of Mayorkun and Dremo, especially remembering the flatness of HKN gang without Davido. How well has DMW done in managing the careers of Dremo and Mayorkun?
Mayorkun looks to maintain a steady path, not a fast-rise, perhaps not what many fans predicted, especially as he entered the industry with the heavy hit Eleko but he continues to be grow.
Mayorkun won the rookie at the 2016 Headies Awards and would be looking to win the highly competitive next rated award at this year's event. With a number of good songs in between, Mayorkun indeed looks like a good retirement plan for Davido.
While Mayorkun is already taking steps in the direction of superstars, we might have to exercise patience with Dremo, as DMW looks to push the artistes tandem, with Dremo next after Mayorkun.
Fans are itching to hear more groundbreaking songs like Fela, Ojere and co. and we only hope Dremo has plans to deliever. Whichever way, the move to start DMW is looking more and more justified, with the increasing successes of artistes under the label, unlike the HKN Gang that looked like a boisterous gathering of friends around the celebrant, Davido.
