Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, 38, is an anomaly in the Nigerian movie industry popularly called Nollywood.

In the movie industry actors normally shy from making political statements. Actors, actresses and singers are not politically outspoken. They mostly show up during election period and sell their faces to the highest bidder.

Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde is the exception to this. During the election period the actress refused to endorse any political party even when she was pressured to do so.

So much pressure on me to support them ... Smh... You won't have to hussle if you were trustworthy... I do that for free! #backoff” she tweeted. At this time fellow actresses Mercy Johnson, Toyin Aimakhu, and Rita Dominic had endorsed the People's Democratic Party (PDP)

This was her stance throughout the general election period. After the elections Jalade-Ekeinde was bold enough to slam the trekking fever that had seized the nation.

Silly youths trekking their futures way. You don't trek to bring awareness to your suffering plights but trek to celebrate politicians? Smh!” she wrote.

The tweet came barely 24 hours after the actress queried the country's state in a tweet saying, “Endless Queues for fuel,No electricity and power surges causing fire outbreaks! WHY?

It wasn’t just an election thing. A year after the elections the actress has continued making political statements. Even though she did not publicly declare that she was supporting President Buhari, she supported him but with the current state of the nation she has voiced her opinion about his government.

I believe in the man “Buhari” he’s the first president I chose to support because of his past record and trusted testimonies however, I believe he’s started making a few mistakes that his attention must be brought to ( because I want to believe he means well) .

“I am not “yet” condemning the fed govt. My immediate grouse NOW is with an insensitive state govt who knows the “many” issues and still wants to impoverish the people.

“A monotonous power generating body left unchecked by the Govt which is allowed to exploit and extort from the people. As for the fuel queues and power outages… Research still on #dontpushme” she tweeted.

Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde is a breath of fresh air. She isn’t posing as some sort off social crusader or politically conscious star but as a concerned citizen of Nigeria.

It will be cool if other celebrities can emulate her. No one is saying celebrities should be Fela but if something is wrong say something about it. It is hypocritical if a celeb who endorses a politician doesn’t say anything when the politician messes up.

Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde just wants a better nation which all of us do. Some celebrities prefer to rather collect a cheque and keep quiet when Rome burns. Omotola is making a voice for herself because she is not afraid to speak up when it matters the most.
