A culture of silence concerning domestic abuse

4 years ago there was an alleged case of domestic violence in Mercy Aigbe's marriage.

Mercy Aigbe, husband Lanre Gentry

7 years of her marriage to Lanre Gentry is in question as photos of her bruised and battered popped up on the Internet last week. To those who are familiar with her story as a celebrity, last week's scandal wasn't the first time Aigbe's marriage has been trailed with domestic violence stories.

In 2013, Mercy Aigbe grabbed the attention of gossip magazines and websites. It was reported that her husband allegedly beat her up at a public event after she had disappeared mysteriously only to be found in her nightgown.

The story was so much of a big deal that the Mercy Aigbe and Lanre Gentry made a video denouncing all the rumours. Body language experts would have known something was wrong with the video. Lanre Gentry was generally aloof as he wife passionately denied the story.

4 years later, her marriage is being haunted by the same allegations. The only difference this time is that there are pictures and you know what they say- pictures never die.

If the allegations are true what made Mercy Aigbe wait four years before speaking up? Maybe this is a case of Stockholm Syndrome. This syndrome can be described as when a victim has affection and feelings for her captor.

Stockholm Syndrome has been used to explain why many abused women can't leave abusive relationships. Many women in abusive relationships hold on to the men who hurt them. This might just what we have here.

A culture of silence concerning domestic violence should not be encouraged. Female celebrities who have a voice should know that they serve as role models to girls and younger women. What they do goes a long away in educating girls. Walking away from a toxic relationship is the best statement a female celebrity can make. Keeping quiet is a no-no.
