5 important facts about Tupac's late mother

Afeni Shakur died early May 3 after sufferinng a heart attack at her home in San Francisco and here is how we remember her.

1. Afeni Shakur wasn't her real name, Alice Faye Williams was. She was born on January 10, 1947 in Lumberton, North Carolina.

2. She had just two kids: Tupac, (who died in September 1996) and Sekyiwa Shakur who is left to mourn her.

3. Besides being a prominent American music business woman, philanthropist and a political activist, Afeni  was also a 'Black Panther'… a revolutionary black nationalist and socialist organization active in the USA from 1966 until 1982, to fight against police brutality. She acted as her own criminal defense attorney after being accused of taking part in numerous bombings as a member of the Panthers.

4.  Afeni founded the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation in Georgia one year after the rapper's tragic death thanks to the money made from his posthumous albums. The foundation provides art programs for young people. She also founded the Amaru Entertainment, the holding company for all Tupac's unreleased material and launched a fashion clothing line, Makaveli Branded whose proceeds goes back to the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation.

5. Shakur won her court battle with Death Row Records after filing an injunction on July 20, 2007 to prevent the record label from selling any unreleased material from Tupac. The label reportedly failed to prove that the 150 unreleased materials were not part of its bankruptcy settlements.
