How ECOWAS Diplomat Infected Port Harcourt Doctor With Ebola

The diplomat got in contact with infected Liberian-American, Patrick Sawyer but he escaped quarantine

A new Ebola-related death has been reported in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital.

A doctor, identified as Iyke Enemuo, died after coming in contact with an employee of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The ECOWAS official was one of the people who came in contact with late Liberian-American, Patrick Sawyer.

However, instead of divulging this to health officials, he fled to Port Harcourt, checked into a hotel and solicited Dr. Enemuo’s services for private treatment.

In the process of treating the diplomat, Enemuo got infected and became severely ill with symptoms including fever, diarrhea and vomiting, all pointers of the Ebola virus.

He subsequently died at the Good Heart Hospital on Friday, August 22, 2014 in Port Harcourt.

Unfortunately the doctor’s wife has also presented symptoms of the disease and she and the couple’s 3 month old baby have been quarantined.

The ECOWAS diplomat who Enemuo treated is alive and well and is reported to have returned to Lagos.

70 other people have been placed under observation due to either primary or secondary contact with the victim.
