A face-off between the management of Lagos State University (LASU) and students of the institutions is in the horizon.
This is indicated by the submissions of some students during Thursday's joint peaceful protest by the Lagos State University Students Union (LASUSU) and the Joint Action Front (JAF) on Thursday.
LASU President Yusuf said they were protesting a directive received from the university authority that students should pay their fees before May 30.
"We will not pay the outrageous fee until the reduction is made," Yusuf said.
Yusuf also said that Lagos state is in the position to offer tuition free education, not hike school fees.
"For a state that generates N77 billion a year and all LASU needs to sustain itself in a year is N10 billion, free tuition is even possible," he said.
JAF Secretary, Mr Abiodun Aremu, said the group marched out in solidarity with the students because of the legitimacy of their struggle.
Placards bearing inscriptions like: “Fee hike, the root cause of crisis in LASU","We demand immediate reversal of increased fees," and “LASU is for all and not for the rich only" were carried by the protesting students.
The astronomical hike in tuition fees is one of the reasons for the ongoing LASU ASUU chapter strike.
