Aregbesola is openly disgracing Osun state — PDP

Governor Rauf Aregbesola's failure to pay the money owed the West African Examination Council (WAEC) by the Osun State government is an 'another open disgrace' according to the opposition party in the state.

Governor Rauf Aregbesola - mobbed by ecstatic crowd of students at Iwo Baptist High School 3

gathered that Osun is among the 19 states owing WAEC about N4bn in unpaid examination registration fees.

In a Sunday statement signed by its Spokesperson, Diran Odeyemi, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) called on Aregbesola to pay the monies owed the examination body so that students can obtain their certificates.

“The money should be paid having allowed students in the state to sit for their papers on credit with the assurance that the state government would pay up,” Odeyemi said.

“Not paying the debt owed WAEC on time, will jeopardize chances of many students that are awaiting result of getting admission to further education Universities and Polytechnics."

The criticism comes days after the WAEC Head of National Office, Lagos, Charles Eguridu, said defaulting states may not get the results for the 2015 May/June Examination.

“We, therefore, want to publicly plead with the affected states to off-set the registration fees of their candidates as soon as possible, as we cannot guarantee that the results of their candidates for the May/June 2015 will be released along with others," Eguridu had said.

The PDP said the development is a disgrace to the state.

“Taking exams on credit is another open disgrace Osun is witnessing under the watch of Mr. Aregbesola.”

Odeyemi also urged Aregbesola to declare an education emergency if he cannot handle the situation.

“If Aregbesola can no longer run the free education programme he inherited from the PDP government for about eight years with almost 80 percent passing rates in external examinations, he should not shy away from declaring a state of emergency in Education in the state."

It will be recalled that Osun is one of the states depending on the Federal government bailout to pay its workers.

Aregbesola is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
