'Avoid herbal drugs, smoking, bleaching creams to protect your kidney'

A Professor of Medicine and Consultant Nephrologist, Prof Evelyn Irobere Unuigbe, has warned Nigerians to stop unhealthy habits in order to protect their kidneys.

A Professor of Medicine and Consultant Nephrologist, Prof Evelyn Irobere Unuigbe, has warned students to stop unhealthy habits that may damage their kidneys.

Unuigbe made the call at the 158th inaugural lecture of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) tagged; 'He gave them for Your Purification and Good Health: Protect those Amazing Kidneys of Yours.'

Unuigbe noted that Acute Kidney Disease (AKD) and Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) were leading causes of death worldwide.

According to her, people should cultivate healthy eating habits, reduce salt intake and desist from using prescribed drugs.

"You should avoid using herbal drugs, watch your obesity level, do not smoke, and desist from using bleaching creams," she added.

The don revealed that Acute Kidney Disease (AKD) and Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) were leading causes of death worldwide and expensive to treat.

"Renal transplant happens to be very expensive and dialysis beyond the funding of an average Nigerian.

"On the average, dialysis and the immunosuppressive drugs which the patient has to take for life can be put at N2.6 million annually."

Unuigbe urged the Nigerian government to make kidney transplants free as is obtainable in USA, England and Wales.
