The management of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has said the institution dismissed 10 members of staff for "thuggery and brigandage."
FUOYE VC accuses sacked lecturers of 'thuggery' as protesters claim ‘victimisation’
FUOYE VC, Prof. Asuzu, has said the lecturers recently sacked by the institution are guilty of thuggery and deserve their dismissal. But other lecturers are accusing the VC of victimisation and other offences.
Following the announcement of the dismissal of the 10 lecturers, their colleagues staged a massive protest on Thursday and accused the management of victimisation and being high-handed.
But FUOYE Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Asuzu, said the dismissal is in order and necessary to maintain order as recommended by Prof. R.A. Omoleyin-led panel, Punch reports.
"No responsible leader will fold his arms and allow few individuals to hold the school to ransom," Asuzu said
"This is an academic environment, where people should display high sense of modesty and intellectualism rather than thuggery and brigandage.”
He added that the dismissed lecturers had no right to partake in the protest, alleging that their appointments were not confirmed.
“They are not supposed to protest at all because their appointments have not been confirmed.”
On Thursday, the protesters had shut down the institution’s main gate, lit bonfires, locked all offices and prevented any academic activity from taking place.
Asuzu was accused of victimising workers, failing to pay allowances and refusing to remit the taxes deducted from their salaries as appropriate.
The protesters had to be dispersed by a detachment of soldiers.
One of the protesters quoted in the Punch report, Mr. Foluso Ojo, condemned the workers' dismissal.
They demanded an immediate stop to the National Housing Fund deduction, promotion and confirmation of staff appointments.
