Schools open sex offenders register as Lagos goes tough on rape
Lagos state has instructed all school proprietors in the state to open sex offenders' registers as cases of rape increase.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Olayinka Olagunjoye, said this on Thursday while speaking at an event organised by the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools in Ikeja, Lagos.
Represented by Director of Private Education and Special Programmes, Mrs. Sewani Amosu, Olagunjoye said the move became necessary with increase in the reported cases of rape.
She urged school proprietors to be proactive in stopping rape and ensuring that they monitor both student and staff.
“From time to time check round your school, check your toilets and some hideouts in your environment," she said
"It is because these are the places where such atrocity is being committed."
The Commissioner added that both male and female members of staff should be monitored.
“Monitor your male and female teachers because we have a case of two female teachers molesting a three-year-old girl."
Olagunjoye also called for improved security in schools.
