ASUU faults sacking of UNIOSUN VC over alleged financial mismanagement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has criticised the recent termination of the appointment of three principal officers of the Osun State University (UNIOSUN).

Sack letters were issued to the Registrar, Dr. Julius Faniran, and Bursar, Alhaji Fatai Lasisi on Tuesday by the university Governing Council which also recommended the termination of the appointment of the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Bashir Okesina to the Visitor, Governor Rauf Aregbesola for approval.

But ASUU, in a statement issued by the university branch Chairman, Dr. Oluseye Abiona, said the action was carried out in bad faith.

“ASUU UNIOSUN wishes to state categorically and condemn in strong terms the termination of appointments of the university bursar and registrar as well as the recommendation for termination of appointment of the vice chancellor," the statement read.

"We view the sacking of these principal officers as prejudicial and done in bad faith on the strength of the fact that it violates the principle of equity and fairness."

A Visitation Panel instituted by Governor Aregbesola had looked into allegations of financial mismanagement at the institution before the termination of appointments began.

The union argued that due process was not followed after panel's report was submitted.

"ASUU UNIOSUN is of the opinion that it would have been better for the council to wait for the White Paper on the report to be released by the Governor before assuming the position of a judge in their own case."

It then called for the "immediate reversal" of the decision.
