Sex-for-Mark Scandal OAU states reasons why Prof Akindele may not be punished

Since the student has refused to show up, OAU spokesman says the university may not punish the lecturer because there must be a complainant.

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University has explained reasons why Prof Richard Akindele, who in a viral audio allegedly asked a female student for sex to increase her grade may not be punished.

In an interview with the Sun, the Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju stated the reasons why the lecturer, who lectures at the department of Accounting in OAU may not be punished for the allegations levied against him  by the student.

First, Olanrewaju said Obafemi Awolowo University was not mentioned in the viral audio

Second, the student Prof Akindele allegedly demand sex from has refused to show up and according to the university PRO,  for the lecturer to be punished, there must be a complainant.

“First and foremost, I want to state it loud and clear that the university is in the know of the audio that has gone viral.

“We have set up a committee to critically investigate the authenticity of the audio to ascertain the characters involved in order to ascertain the veracity of the allegation and also to ascertain if the characters are of the Obafemi Awolowo University because throughout the recording, there was no mention of OAU.

“Yes, the lecturer’s voice heard in the audio was clearly demanding for sex from the student and OAU has zero tolerance for sexual harassment, intimidation or coercion under whatever guise.

“Since it came to our notice, the university has begun the process of identifying the characters in this breach of regulation because OAU has a code of conduct for staff and students.

“We frown at anybody whose conduct or utterances might breach the code of conduct of the anti-sexual harassment policy and to this end, any member of the university who goes beyond the laws of the university will be sanctioned.”

OAU says Prof Akindele is not a criminal

However, following the reports that the lecturer has gone into hiding, the school spokesperson said  Olanrewaju on Thursday, April 12, 2018, said that he didn't know if he has gone into hiding because he is not a criminal.

Olanrewaju said Professor Akindele just finished his sabbatical when the audio conversation leaked. He, however, added that the lecturer still has some accumulated leave but only the HOD of his department could tell if the lecturer has been coming to office or not.
