Ifedolapo Oladepo, a graduate of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), arrived at the NYSC orientation camp in Kano, but things took an unexpected turn when she took ill.

Soldiers in different camps generally have a culture of trying to instil what they claim to be discipline into "bloody civilian" corps members. That includes corporal punishment, and sometimes, it could mean turning deaf ears.

This was a case of them thinking Ifedolapo was pretending to be sick to avoid NYSC programs. According to reports, the long distance travel took a toll on her, which made her fall ill.

When she complained to the officials, they thought she was lying. They were wrong, and by the time they realised, it was already too late. Ifedolapo was dead. According to our sources in the orientation camp, she is believed to have been initially rushed to the Red Cross Unit on the camp premises, before being rushed to a hospital outside the camp.

"The officials are not saying anything about it. Everyone is just quiet." Apparently, the officials have given nothing but radio silence on the incident.

Every year in camp, there are reports of maltreatment of corpers in the name of discipline, which is mostly just soldiers harassing corps members. We're currently speaking with people in the orientation camp to get more angles on the story.
