The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has debunked reports linking it to late Daniel Iyoha, an alleged final year student of the institution, who recently committed suicide by hanging.

UNIBEN says the Iyoha was never actually a student of the institution.

In mid-June, Iyoha, a 27-year-old reported to be a law student at UNIBEN hung himself to death in their family home at No. 17, Obamwonyi Street, Off Universal Road, Benin City.

Iyoha, devout Catholic, reportedly attended mass, did his laundry and hung himself by a wrapper tied tyo a ceiling fan in his bedroom while his mother was away and his sister was in another room.

But the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Michael Osaruyi, in a press statement said the student was not a student of the intuition.

"For the avoidance of doubt, Late Daniel Iyoha (may God bless his soul) was not a duly admitted student of the University of Benin," Osaruyi said.

The Spokesman said the deceased had been offered admission twice but failed to register duly both times.

"From available records at the disposal of the University’s Information and Communication Technology/Central Records Processing Unit, the late Daniel Iyoha, had indeed been offered provisional admission into the Department of Theatre Arts and Mass Communication for the 2009/2010 academic session.’’

“But he again applied for admission to study Political Science and Public Administration in the 2011/2012 academic session and was again given provisional admission.

"He nonetheless failed to pay the requisite and duly approved charges to complete the admission process and was therefore not a Student of University of Benin, having failed to formalize the admission process in his two attempts to become a student of the University.’’

This revelation may give an insight as to the motive behind Iyoha's suicide.

Perhaps he had deceived his family that he was truly a student and should have been in his final year.

The pressure of those around him expectation him to graduate, while he is not actually a student, could have pushed him to the edge.
