800 Boarding Students Share 150 Beds ...Gov Declares Emergency

In Nasarawa state, the situation is so bad in government schools that, in one of them, as many as 800 students share 150 beds. This decay has prompted the declaration of a state of emergency by the state governor.

A state of emergency has been declared in the education sector of Nasarawa state following disturbing discoveries by the state governor, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura.

The governor declared the state of emergency after a meeting with some stakeholders at the Government Girls Secondary School, Garaku, Kokona.

Student Pulse gathered that Al-Makura had on an unscheduled visit to a school in the state found out that the facilities in most government schools were in a state of disrepair.

"I saw with my eyes that most of the hostels are in state of disrepair without toilet facilities,” he said.

“I believe what I saw is the replica of what is obtained in other boarding schools across the state, so whatever decision we take here will also apply to other boarding schools in the state.”

800 Students,150 Beds

Principal of the school, Lydia Saidu, urged quick intervention, especially in the students' living quarters.

“We have 150 beds now, which are not good and not enough because we have 800 students in the school presently,” she said.

Al-Makura said his government will act fast "a pragmatic approach for quick fix-it" approach to turn around the fortunes of all schools across the three senatorial districts  in the state.
