I'm 'desperate' for an American scholarship — YABATECH super athlete
Precious Okoronkwo, best athlete at the 14th Nigeria Polytechnic Games (NIPOGA), says she is desperately in need of a scholarship to America as she chases an Olympic gold medal.
Precious Okoronkwo was the tournament’s best athlete after winning won three gold medals in the Long Jump, High Jump and triple Jump events as well as a bronze in Javelin to help her school emerge overall winners of the Games which was hosted by the Federal Polytechnic, Bida.
The athlete, who studies Accounting at YABATECH, has set her sights on an Olympic gold medal.
“I so much dream of when I will stand on the podium with my gold medal just like Chioma did," Okoronkwo was quoted as saying in a .
"Olympics is the height of an athlete’s achievement and this is what I want to achieve."
Okoronkwo however said she hoped for a scholarship that will take her to America where her dreams can be actualized.
“I want to go the United States of America where we have better facilities and at the same time continue my education," she said.
"I am desperate to get scholarship in America so as to have the opportunity of closing ranks with the best in my field.”
If Okoronkwo gets her wish, she will join the long list of Nigerian talents, in all fields of endeavour, who have found fulfilment abroad.
The reason for this is that there are hardly support systems or facilities to help them achieve their goals.
Soon, Okoronkwo might be standing on a podium at the Olympics wearing a jersey that is not green-white-green.
