A Lagos lawmaker, Mr Hakeem Sokunle, on Tuesday donated two school buses  to his constituents ease transportation problems faced by students in Oshodi/Isolo Local Government Area on their way to and from school.

Sokunle, representing Oshodi/Isolo Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly, also donated two cars to constituents for use as taxis.

He said that students in the area face a lot of hardship trekking to and from school.

According to him, easing the hardship will help to improve students’ learning process, as they will be in right frame of mind to assimilate.

Education is the bedrock of development and the best legacy we can bequeath to our children is education.

“Realizing this, I consider transportation a huge challenge to learning process and this motivated me to provide these school buses for students’ use.

“If you see students in the morning and afternoon, you will agree with me that they need a means of transportation to facilities of learning.

“It has nothing to do with politics; if I had the means, I would have provided up to seven of the buses to cater for the needs of our school children.

“These buses will ease transportation problems among students. It might not part of what we promised our constituents, but I think it is worth doing,” Sokunle said.

According to him, the free school bus ride will also enhance security of the students whose lives are always endangered when walking by the road side.

Sokunle said he had provided free computer training to six sets of trainees in the area.

He said that he was committed to doing anything that would benefit the people.

Sokunle said the two taxi cars were part of his empowerment programme to reduce unemployment.

The lawmaker, who handed over the buses and taxis to the Chairman of Oshodi/Isolo, Mr Bolaji Ariyo, promised to maintain the buses and take care of their drivers.

Ariyo, who described the donation of the school buses as unique, thanked Sokunle for the gesture.

You have done a good thing for us and we will never forget.

“Nobody has ever given us two buses in Oshodi in the past. We will not forget today in this local government area,” he said.

In her remarks, Mrs Funmilayo Onadipe, the Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary, Education District Six, said the school buses would reduce the stress of mobility.

According to her, the gesture will also encourage pupils to go to school.

Onadipe urged other lawmakers to emulate Sokunle.

Also speaking, Alhaji Rasheed Alamutu, the Chairman, Oshodi/Isolo Community Development Committee (CDC) commended the lawmaker for remembering students.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event had in attendance so many chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the education secretary, head teachers and others.
