ASUU urges Buhari to implement 2009 agreement

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), have urged Nigerian president, Goodluck Jonathan to reexamine and implement the 2009 ASUU/FGN agreement.

The union expressed its displeasure tat two years after its former President, Professor Festus Iyayi was killed by a government convoy in Kogi State, the agreement has not been implemented.

Iyayi, who was killed in a car crash on the 12th of November 2013. He was on his way to attend an emergency ASUU meeting to suspend the six-month old ASUU strike in 2013.

According to Vanguard, the Ibadan Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, Professor Segun Ajiboye expressed his sadness that since 2013, when ASUU suspended the strike, the promises made by the Federal Government have not been fulfilled. He disclosed that universities were yet to get any intervention fund asides the initial N200 billion released in 2013 out of the N1.3 trillion intervention agreement signed with the union, adding that nothing was injected in 2014 and 2015.

The union therefore called on Buhari to pay the outstanding intervention fund of N1.3 trillion, earned academic allowances and commence renegotiation of the agreement.

He said: “Festus Iyayi fought for the masses and lived an exemplary life. We are calling on the new Minister of Education and President Buhari to ensure that children of the poor have access to qualitative education. The Minister must ensure the full implementation of the 2009 agreement. The National Assembly to drive the change in the country by voting 26percent of the budget on Education. Iyayi’s dream for Education in Nigeria must not die.”
